Is Somnus legit?
You should be able to check who you’re paying and what you’re using. Here are the facts, and the limits of what you can verify yourself.
Who runs Somnus
Somnus is an independent project run by Francisco Costa in Lisbon, Portugal. It provides a desktop agent and prepaid access to third-party AI models. It is not Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or an official endorsement from those companies. The desktop app is based on Hermes Agent by Nous Research under the MIT license, with the original license and attribution retained.

Payments through Stripe
Top-ups are processed by Stripe. Somnus does not store your full card number or security code. Credit is applied after a verified payment notification, not just because a checkout page says it succeeded. You can compare the receipt with your credited top-ups and balance in Billing.
Stripe processing is not an endorsement of Somnus or proof of model authenticity. Start small, check your receipt, and read the refund terms before paying.
Exactly how the bonus works
Your first-ever top-up receives at least 2.5× API credit: a $5 pre-tax top-up adds $12.50, and $10 adds $25. Later top-ups receive 2× as standard, 2.2× from $50, 2.35× from $100 and 2.5× from $200. The multiplier applies to the pre-tax amount after discounts. Credit does not expire.
Extra credit is not a lower token rate. Usage is deducted at the listed model rates; the bonus increases how much usage your payment covers. Standard-credit examples on the homepage describe later top-ups, not the first-top-up offer. Compare the details on Pricing and the model rates on About.
Check the models yourself
Use your own Somnus key from API keys. Keep it private and never paste it into a public model-checking website. You can inspect the available model IDs without installing the desktop app:

-H "Authorization: Bearer $SOMNUS_API_KEY"- Pick a listed ID and make a small request from your terminal or an OpenAI-compatible SDK. Record the request time, returned model field, usage and request ID if available.
- Compare the request with your Usage page and balance change. Confirm that the rate agrees with the published model pricing.
- If you have direct access to the same provider model, compare several identical tasks and settings. Check structured output, tool use and context behaviour, not just one answer.
- For suspected routing differences, email the request ID and model ID to Somnus and ask for upstream routing details. Do not send your API key or sensitive prompts.
A model name in an API response, a self-identification prompt, or similar-looking answers is not cryptographic proof of the underlying model. Behavioural comparisons can highlight inconsistencies but cannot establish provenance. Somnus has not published an independent model-authenticity audit or cryptographic attestation; this page does not claim one.
Try the API before installing
You can use the API without running an installer or PowerShell command. Download the desktop app only from links on somnus.world or the linked Somnus release repository. A Windows recognition warning is not a security certification; do not bypass it unless you are comfortable with the source and have checked the file.
